This underrated Medoc consistently produces wines of fifth-growth quality. The sleeper 2000 is tannic yet juicy, structured, and intense, with copious quantities of black currant fruit tinged with cedar and damp earth notes. Chteau Lanessan, which has been in the same family since 1793, commands a 264-hectare estate divided into 130 ha of woods, 49 ha of meadows, 45 ha arable land and 40 ha of vines. The vineyard is situated on gravelly hills where the soil is composed of quarternary gravel called ?Garonne gravel? over a subsoil of broken limestone. It is planted to premium grape varieties: 75% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 4% Petit-Verdot and 1% Cabernet franc. Winemaking is traditional (more than 20 days vatting) and the wine is being sought more and more every day for its consistently remarkable quality. A certain number of Gold Medals or merit awards have also been attributed to the wine of Lanessan. The Bouteiller family, whose archives are carefully kept at chteau Lanessan, also own a museum of The Horse: stables, harnesses and a collection of period carriages from the 1900 era which can be visited in addition to the winery and vineyards (from March 20 until November, daily from 9 to 12 a.m. and 2. to 6 p.m., and
